Four year starter (three at North Carolina Central). Started 35 games over his three seasons there. Was named the MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2023. Was twice named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week last season. There are many intriguing parts to his game, the first being a huge difference between his skills as a pass protector and his skills as a run blocker. As a pass protector, he has a solid base with good hips and long arms, stones the defender right where they stand. Has a good anchor with good low hips. Has a quick punch and reset. Passes off stunts with ease and has good vision and feel for what the defense is doing. Excellent mobility and the ability to scramble back into place. Great hands and utilization of reach. Longer arms are a plus. When run blocking he’s more of a flash player with some solid initial pop and hand placement. His hand placement in run blocking is inconsistent. He needs to lower his pads to drive block a defender. Has slower feet which limits his ability to hunt off the line defenders, his base gets too wide from time to time. Simpkins has heavy legs. He doesn’t always finish blocks. Inconsistent reacting to what the defensive line is doing. Lacks explosion off the ball. His overall run game skills will have to be upgraded. Will be best suited as a center on a team that emphasizes the passing game.
