Two year starter. Honorable mention All-Big 10 in 2024. Has been primarily a rotational interior defender before becoming a full-time starter last season. Solid frame throughout with very good movement skills for an interior defender. Played three, two, 2i, one and zero techniques. At his best as a gap control player. Explosive first step with quick powerful hands engaging blockers. Can snap an offensive lineman’s head back on initial charge. Plays at a low pad level and gets leverage on blockers. Also gets ball side leverage as the play moves to gaps outside his. Anchors well at the point of attack and can get off blocks to make plays in his gap. Moves well laterally and can outrun reach blocks. Has range to make plays outside the tackle box. Above average change of direction showing agility in tight spaces. As a pass rusher, gets into the frame of blockers and uses a bull rush to collapse the pocket. At times he knocks the blocker back and slips around him on a path to the quarterback. Other than that there’s not much imagination to his pass rush and he lacks a counter move. For the most part he’s a push the pocket guy with little escape ability. Lack of ideal bulk shows on down blocks as he can get knocked off balance and washed out. Can be vulnerable to double teams against a powerful drive blocker. Has some athletic skills to work with as a rotational player. Will need to develop more in the pass rush to be more than a two down player.
