Three year starter. First team All-Big 12 and third team AP All-America in 2023, First team All-SEC, consensus All-America and Butkus Award finalist in 2024. Athletic high motor player with ideal height, frame, and length for an NFL off-the ball linebacker. Played the Mike position in the Sooners’ defense but has experience as an outside linebacker including as an overhang player. Known for his cover skill, his run defense improved in 2024. Patient with initial read but when he “sees it” is quick to react. Excellent key diagnose he usually shows precise inside run fits. Gets downhill quickly and can slip or avoid blocks on the move. Will take an open window with a knack for the big play. Has been productive with tackles for a loss. Shows above average redirection skill along with functional speed. Has a large tackle radius and flashes ability to make plays in space. When he’s right can square up a tackle with gather and drive. Has been a solid but sometimes inconsistent zone defender with a feel for pattern pressure. Can find and pass off crossers and expand the zone when necessary. Solid carrying the seam with an inside receiver. Closes quickly with the ball in the air and uses his height to stress the throwing lane. Man to man skill but may not be quite athletic enough to consistently mirror shifty backs. Flashes the quickness and flex to blitz but needs to use his hands better to get off blocks. Overall block protection has been inconsistent as he tends to play high on blocks and lacks a powerful punch. Angles to the ball on outside pursuit can be off. Missed tackle percentage is still higher than desired. Will need to continue to improve but has three down linebacker potential.
2024 Stats: 109 T, 8 TFL, 1 sack, 3 QBH. OSR:6/35. 10-1.52. Draft projection: 2nd/3rd round
