Three year starter. First team All-ACC, ACC Defensive Player of the Year, First team AP All-American and winner of the Ted Hendricks Award for the nation’s top defensive end. Somewhat undersized but has plus length that he uses to his advantage. He’s a fluid mover who played primarily in a two point stance as a wide nine technique. Quick at the snap he shoots his hands into blocker’s chest with an instant jolt to gain separation. Smooth and sudden changing directions he can come off blocks and make plays inside to the perimeter. Slips blocks with an arm over on the move working on the edge. Quickness gets him upfield and he’s been productive making tackles for a loss. Does well on inside stunts easily redirecting from upfield to inside gap. Strong fundamental tackling skill, his long arms create a huge tackle radius allowing him to corral a ball carrier in a long space. Wraps and finishes consistently. Excels as a pass rusher with explosiveness at the snap and has some diversity in moves to get free. Presses tackles with extension before running a move. Uses an arm over and under along with various hand swipes and chops. Flashes an out to in move on oversetting tackles. Adept at running a tight arc to turn the corner and close on the quarterback. Often draws double teams and chips to counteract his pass rush. Size limitations show if a blocker can get into his frame. He can get covered up by big athletic tackles. Will sometimes take a side on a block and create a running lane. Chase speed is average. May need to add to his pass rush arsenal at the next level. Should contribute as a rotational rusher right away with three down potential.
