Junior entry, three year starter. First team All-Big 10 the past two years along with consensus All-American. Was named the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year in the Big 10. Versatile defender who has played off the ball and on the edge in the Penn State defense. Prior to 2024 he’s been an effective chase linebacker with solid coverage skills. He still got some reps off the ball, but in 2024 he made the successful transition to the edge primarily to take advantage of his pass rush skill. We could still see his off the ball linebacker skill in his ability to chase across the field and make plays in the alley. Quickly accelerates and has a closing burst in chase mode. Shows incredible reactions and quick change of direction with a nose for the football. Has displayed solid cover skill dropping to underneath zones or matching a back. His speed, range and ability to break with the ball in the air gives him an excellent tool set that can be used in multiple ways. It took awhile, but by mid-season Carter was a dominant pass rusher while developing an impressive pass rush arsenal. He can win with speed or stack moves. Has excellent bend with an extra gear of acceleration turning the corner to get to the quarterback. Can easily adjust his path to the quarterback’s movement in or out of the pocket. Has developed an effective spin move as a counter and has improved using his hands on swipes and chops. As a tackler, he’s fundamentally sound and explosive driving through ball carriers. Comes in high at times and sometimes overruns tackles by not gathering. Inconsistent taking on blocks and will get upright at times. An elite prospect with Swiss army knife potential in any defensive scheme.
